Match Report
The Kiwis, on the back of a 3-0 home thrashing of Australia, lost four top batsmen for scores of 4, 0, 11 and 3. Mashrafe Mortaza took 4-44 before Jacob Oram made light of a recently broken finger to hit 88 in a total of 224. Teenager Tamim Iqbal hit 46 off 48 before Mortaza saw his team home with successive sixes off James Franklin. Bangladesh did not even require the last over as they celebrated their first win of any description against New Zealand.
Mashrafe Bin Mortaza, fast becoming an allrounder of worth, blasted a 14-ball 30 including two mighty blows for six off the fourth and fifth deliveries of the penultimate over bowled by left-arm paceman James Franklin as Bangladesh quite sensationally toppled New Zealand's 226 with seven balls to spare in the first World Cup official practice game at the 3Ws Oval in Barbados today (Wednesday).
Mortaza had earlier starred with the new ball as he cut through the Black Caps top order after Stephen Fleming had won the toss and elected to bat. First victim for the Bangladesh fast bowler was opener Lou Vincent who after cracking a four off the first delivery was bowled next ball. Syed Rasel had number three Fleming caugt by slip fielder Abdur Razzak for a duck and then Mortaza got rid of Ross Taylor and Peter Fulton to leave the Cup favourites on 34/4 in the 12th over.
Abdur Razzak then chipped in with the wickets of Scot Styris and Craig McMillan in quick succession before a rearguard from Jacob Oram (88 off 107) and wicketkeeper Brendon McCullum (46 off 54) took their side past 200. Mortaza and Razzak finished with four wickets apiece.
The Bangladesh chase began in the most confident fashion and the openers Tamim Iqbal and Javed Omer took the score to 70 by the 15th over. Both departed in their 40s and Aftab Ahmed was lbw to Daniel vettori for 0. But Shakib Al Hasan, skipper Habibul Bashar, Mohammad Ashraful and Mushfiqur Rahim all made useful contributions before the Mortaza blitz sealed the game in the Tigers' favour. Bangladesh's final practice match is against Scotland on Thursday at the same venue.
